Hey all!
This is just a quick update about CNC stories. TL;DR, you’re still allowed to post them, but we’ll be reviewing them all manually.
We’ve been dealing with an uptick in the number of CNC (Consensual Non-Consent) stories recently. While this is understandably a very popular kink, and one that at least a few moderators have practiced in their daily lives, we’re finding that it’s also being misunderstood to a heavy degree.
In order to make sure that CNC submissions aren’t just rape in disguise, we’re enabling an automated filter that will alert moderators whenever a user submits a CNC story. This will just give us a chance to look it over and make sure it’s appropriate for this community before it goes live. When submitting a CNC story, you’ll get a little notification that we’re looking your story over, and it’ll go live shortly after that.
We’re happy to discuss any questions you have about this in the comments below, or privately by modmail if you’re shy, but here’s a little FAQ about CNC and this decision overall.
- How dare you? Great question; our commitment is to keep this community running, which means we’re obligated to limit the number of things that Reddit can shut us down for.
- It’s been 23 seconds and my CNC post hasn’t been approved; what gives? Aw shit, you got us! We were probably napping on the job. Just kidding, we’re just busy people – I can confirm that each of us completes about 30 actions per day on average, so chances are you’ll just need to wait until someone checks the queue again. Shouldn’t be more than a few hours at most.
- I put [CNC] in the title of my sexual assault fantasy, why did you not approve it? Ahhh young padewan, you wrote some bad CNC! Happens to the best of us. You see, contrary to popular opinion, slapping [CNC] on a rape story still makes it rape!
- I’m confused. Not a question, but still valid. You see, CNC is a BDSM dynamic where a couple has clearly and enthusiastically agreed to forego the need to verbally ask for consent when getting freaky. This allows for things like risque roleplaying or waking each other up with sexy surprises. It is categorically NOT an excuse for one partner to get away with a little guilt-free sexual assault. For CNC to work, the consent is assumed, but still very fucking important.
- What are you looking for when you review my CNC submission? Love this, hell yeah. If you’re writing something that has a CNC dynamic, we’ll be looking to make sure that both parties have participated in the initial agreement, neither party has been coerced into participating, the consent is not withdrawn at any point, and there’s no undue physical or psychological violence being committed that goes beyond reasonable expectations of either party.
- Will I get banned if you reject my CNC submission? Here’s the best part! Right now, we’re treating poorly constructed CNC stories as noncon submissions, which have been prohibited here for about a year now. This is leading to a fair number of bans. Moving forward though, the filtered queue will give us an opportunity to do a bit more focused outreach to chat about your story. Instead of a ban, you’ll have a chance to rework your story and have another crack at submitting.
Again, we get that this might feel a little over the top, but we’re just 4 people and stuff is slipping through the cracks right now. Something about modern problems and modern solutions or something. Our very own u/StarDragonfruit_0813 has prepared a wiki entry that you can refer to if you still have questions about CNC too; make sure to give it a read! As always, please feel free to leave any questions or comments you have below.
Thanks!
